2011 Convocation
Twenty Percent of U Graduates are CSBS Students
David Rudd, dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Science, congratulated graduates at convocation held Friday, May 6 in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The college awarded 1400 bachelor degrees and 150 graduate degrees—20 percent of all degrees awarded at the U in 2011.
Dean Rudd recognized both students and faculty for various accomplishments during the academic year. Students recognized were:
- Jeff Dixon, political science graduate named the Young Alumni Association Outstanding Senior
- Ashley Edgette, environmental studies and political science graduate named the Civically Engaged Student of the Year
- Brandon Peart, senior in economics and political science who will receive the prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship.
The faculty recognized included:
- Dr. Marissa Diener, professor of family and consumer studies, recipient of the University Distinguished Service Award
- Dr. Susan Olson, vice president and professor of political science, recipient of the Linda K. Amos Award for Distinguished Service to Women
- Dr. Heather Melton, assistant professor of sociology, recipient of the CSBS superior Teaching Award
- Dr. Kathleen Nicoll, assistant professor of geography, recipient of the CSBS Superior Teaching Award
- Dr. Zachary Zimmer, professor of sociology, recipient of the CSBS Superior Research Award
- Dr. Andrew Jorgenson, assistant professor of sociology, recipient of the CSBS Superior Research Award.
Dean Rudd also recognized the distinguished and honorary alumni from the college who were honored at a luncheon the previous afternoon. See the following story for more information.
For the first time in many years a student response was offered during convocation. Shilo Platts, a graduating senior in psychology, delivered the speech.
