Basketball Coach Jack Gardner gave me an athletic scholarship to attend the U of U. I played during my freshman year, including one exciting game when I stole a pass and made the bucket that won the game. At the end of that year, I stopped playing for the basketball team and joined the debate team, where I learned a great deal that helped me to prepare for a career as a lawyer.
Professor Reed Frischknecht counseled me to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science with emphasis on economics and French. I followed his advice, while also participating in the first Honors program offered by the U. My most significant work for Professor J.D. Williams was part of that Honors program. With the help of professors Frischknecht, Williams, and Sam Rich, I was later admitted to Harvard University to study for a Master of Public Administration degree.
Subsequently I earned a J.D. degree at UC Berkeley and went on to practice law for the County of Los Angeles, Department of State, and the Asian Development Bank in the Philippines. At the Department of State, I edited the “Digest of United States Practice in International Law 1977.”
After I retired from the ADB, I co-authored a book entitled “An Introduction to Sustainable Development” (2008) and then began teaching law at the San Beda University Graduate School of Law where I often teach American law subjects. Without my education at the U of U, I seriously doubt that I would have enjoyed such a very meaningful and enjoyable life. I am so very grateful for having attended such a great University.
